Dear Editor,
Members of the current Mahopac Board of Education are unfit to serve because they have done irreparable damage to our school district and community by forcing the previous superintendent, Christine Tona, out of office.
I presented my concerns to the board at their Sept. 4 meeting, as follows:
I am wondering how this board will go about finding a new superintendent for our district.
What respectable professional would want to take a position when a highly qualified superintendent was forced out for no good cause? And we know there was no good cause because the district would not have had to buy out her contract if there was cause.
What respectable professional would take the position when the board publicly works against the superintendent, publishing highly questionable accusations against her during the budget process? Or when a board member encourages the public to vote against a fair budget? Or when the town votes down the budget repeatedly, showing their lack of support for our school district? And when the board that insisted on fiscal conservatism wastes an estimated $1 million forcing out a good superintendent?
Will we only have the choice of under qualified candidates who only have the position because of cronyism?
Will we only have a choice of men, in a female dominated field, because the one female superintendent in our history was bullied out of office?
Will we only have a choice of Republicans because the local Republican party has politicized our school district?
My concern is that the only way our school district can recruit a well qualified superintendent is if this board openly admits to the mishandling of hiring and retaining a superintendent and if those board members who created this situation step down and allow for an emergency, fair election of a new board.
