Police warn Mahopac residents after string of car break-ins

Posted

Carmel Police are urging residents to lock their vehicles after a string of overnight break-ins in the Lake Casse, Lake Drive and Ridge Road neighborhoods of Mahopac.

According to a community alert issued by the department, seven unlocked vehicles parked on four streets were entered between approximately 3:37 a.m. and 5:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Police said all the vehicles had been left unlocked.

The department did not say what, if anything, was stolen or whether any suspects have been identified. However, police warned that thieves are moving quickly through neighborhoods looking for easy targets.

"Don't make it easy for thieves," the alert states.

Police are reminding residents to take several precautions to reduce the risk of becoming victims, including locking vehicle doors at all times, removing purses, backpacks, electronics, firearms and spare keys from vehicles, and keeping any necessary valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk.

Residents are also encouraged to park in well-lit areas, close garage doors and ensure both their homes and vehicles are secured, noting that thieves often check both.

Anyone who notices suspicious people, vehicles or activity is urged to contact the Carmel Police Department immediately at 845-628-1300 or call 911 in an emergency. Police are also asking residents with doorbell, driveway or dash cameras to review footage from the overnight hours and provide any photos or video that may assist investigators.
