Carmel police arrested three drivers for reckless driving and impounded three vehicles during a targeted enforcement detail at the Mahopac Village Shopping Center (Acme Market) on Route 6, responding to ongoing complaints about dangerous driving and noise.
The April 17 operation by the Carmel Police Department’s Conditions Enforcement Team was launched after what officials described as “numerous and chronic” complaints from merchants and residents about speeding, aggressive driving, burnouts and excessive noise in the area.
In a four-hour span, officers issued 22 traffic summonses in addition to the arrests and vehicle impoundments. Police said a separate traffic stop during the detail also led to information that resulted in a menacing arrest in an unrelated case.
Those cited or arrested ranged in age from 17 to 52 and included residents of Mahopac, Mahopac Falls, Yorktown Heights, Brewster, Yonkers and Baldwin Place, according to police.
“It’s not just local kids when you have 52-year-olds and those coming up from lower Westchester,” Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann said. “And it’s not just a ‘car meet’ when they speed, drive recklessly, and engage in other criminal activity.”
Hoffmann added that while organized car shows and cruises can be positive community events, illegal behavior will not be tolerated.
“Those who keep acting in a reckless and illegal manner will be summonsed, arrested and have their cars impounded,” he said.
Police said they plan to continue similar enforcement efforts to address quality-of-life concerns and thanked residents and local businesses for reporting issues and assisting with the investigation.
