MAHOPAC, N.Y.—A Mahopac man is in critical condition with "life-threatening" injuries after an altercation over the weekend. His alleged assailant has been charged with felony assault and attempted murder and is currently being held without bail.

According to a Carmel PD press release, units were called at around 5:15 on Saturday morning (Dec. 7) after reports of a possible assault near Curry Road in Mahopac. Officers arrived to find two men in the roadway.

“The first subject was identified as 32-year-old Brooks Lawrence of Connecticut,” Carmel PD Lt. Michael Bodo said in the press release. “The second subject, a 44-year-old Mahopac resident, was found unconscious with life-threatening injuries. CPD officers immediately began rendering aid to the injured subject and requested EMS to the scene."

The injured man was taken to Westchester Medical Center via STAT Flight Helicopter, where he is being treated for his injuries, police said. According to Carmel PD, he remained in critical condition on Sunday morning.

Police said a preliminary investigation by CPD detectives determined that Lawrence and the victim had gotten into a physical altercation, which resulted in the victim sustaining “life-threatening injuries.”

Lawrence has been charged with second-degree attempted murder (a class B felony) and second-degree assault (a class D felony). He was arraigned by Carmel Town Justice Thomas Jacobellis and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility without bail.

Carmel PD said the investigation is ongoing and asks anyone with information about the incident to contact Carmel Police at 845-628-1300.
