Patriot Day brings first responders and students together

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. - On Sept. 11, Bedford Hills Elementary School welcomed local first responders to its fourth annual Patriot Day assembly, including Town of Bedford police officers, volunteer firefighters from the Bedford Hills and Katonah Fire Departments, and volunteer responders from the Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps (KBHVAC).

The exterior of the school was decorated with flags and posters welcoming the first responders. Inside, it was heartwarming to watch children dart from their class lines to hug a parent or grandparent who had come to participate.

During the assembly, first responders spoke about why they serve their communities. The joy and pride they felt in volunteering was evident, as was the personal connection many had to Bedford Hills Elementary. Some had attended the school themselves, while one or two remembered attending when the building was still a high school.

While many spoke about their desire to help their communities, others shared how the events of Sept. 11, 2001, inspired them to serve. One responder said the attacks inspired him to become a police officer; he retired from the force just last year.

Others highlighted their long-standing commitments to their departments. One first responder has been a member of the fire department for 50 years, while another has served with KBHVAC for 29 years. Some said they joined because volunteering was a “family thing,” while others spoke about the friendships they had formed through their organizations.

All expressed how honored they were to serve their community.

The assembly continued with fifth graders singing America the Beautiful and a presentation of personalized snack boxes for the visiting departments. As part of the celebration, first graders created posters for each department, while second graders made pennants expressing their gratitude. Representatives from each department were able to take the artwork home.

BHES hosted a meaningful morning that left both students and first responders feeling honored and appreciated. It was a fitting Patriot Day celebration and a beautiful expression of gratitude for those who serve the Bedford community.
