A brief but deadly Revolutionary War clash returned to focus May 2 as the community marked the Battle of Pines Bridge, a defeat for Continental forces.
The skirmish is remembered for those who fell, many of them members of Col. Christopher Greene’s Rhode Island Regiment, a rare integrated unit that included formerly enslaved African Americans and Native Americans.
The remembrance honored the regiment’s stand against British forces on May 14, 1781, and its place in both Yorktown’s and the nation’s history. The commemorative event included a battle reenactment, tribute ceremonies, a monument dedication and a parade.
