Pac shakes off Rye loss with wins over Harrison, Lakeland

Posted

After opening last week with a 60-54 loss to a good Rye team, the Wolf Pac boys responded with back-to-back convincing wins, topping Lakeland, 63-43, Thursday (Jan. 22), and Harrison, 78-66, two days later.

In Saturday’s Coaches vs. Cancer event at Harrison (7-5), Drew Lichtenberger’s 22-point, eight-rebound performance paced a well-balanced Pac attack. Matt Reilly had a huge game with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists, Rye LaRue dropped 17 points and grabbed five boards, while Ethan Dedvukaj added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists and Justin Beberman had 10 points.

Mahopac (10-5) hosted its own Pac vs. Cancer event two nights earlier in The Den and came out with a sense of urgency that Lakeland was unable to match. The Pac closed the opening quarter strongly to 20-7 after one before building the advantage to 16 (32-16) by halftime.

“We played a good, complete game,” Pac coach Matt Calabro said. “When we play all four quarters, we can be tough.”

Reilly led the Pac with 17 points, to go with nine rebounds and four assists. Lichtenberger unveiled another big performance with 15 points and 10 rebounds, LaRue came up with 13 points and five boards, and Beberman added nine points.

“It was really nice to see Ryan LaRue get going,” Calabro said. “Lichtenberger has been unbelievable, he looks like a bona fide All-Section prospect, and he’s shown leadership. Our balance is really helping us. Lakeland and Harrison were two good bounce-back wins.”

The bounce-back was from a six-point loss to Rye the prior Tuesday on the road, a game Calabro felt the Pac let slip out of its hands.

“That was a good test,” Calabro said of the matchup. “Rye is a good team, and we were up double digits in the third. But then we stopped scoring. I feel like we let one get away.”

Lichtenberger led Mahopac with 18 points, with Beberman and Dedvukaj each adding 14. Henry Shoemaker led the Garnets (8-3) with 30 points.

Mahopac was set to compete in the Friends vs. Cancer event Friday and Saturday at the Obama School for Social Justice in Yonkers, taking on Valhalla Friday and either the host or Clarkstown North on Saturday.
