SOMERS, N.Y. - One person was injured when a car smashed into the Optum medical building on Route 202 in Somers on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Fire and EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene around 2:45 p.m., the Somers Volunteer Fire Department reported.

Once there, they made contact with the driver and initiated medical care.

Fire units assessed the structural damage to the building and shored up the compromised area to prevent further collapse so the victim could be freed.

Due to the nature of the incident, additional mutual aid resources were called in.

The Westchester County Technical Rescue Team and Bedford Hills Fire Department assisted in shoring up the building, removing debris, and the extrication, which took about 45 minutes, fire officials said.

The lone occupant was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Fire units turned the scene over to the Somers Building Department before returning to service.

There were no reports of injuries inside the medical offices. As of this writing, Optum had not returned a call for comment.
