Officials investigate after swastika found on desk at Somers High School

SOMERS, N.Y. - Somers school officials are investigating an incident involving hate graffiti discovered earlier this week at Somers High School.

According to a notice from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Adam Bronstein on Dec. 16, a swastika was found drawn on a desk in one of the high school’s classrooms and was promptly reported by students to a teacher. Families were notified of the incident earlier in the day.

The superintendent noted that this is not the first time hate symbols have been found in district schools this year. In September, three swastikas and an obscenity were discovered on the wall of a student bathroom at Somers Middle School.

“In Somers, we take great pride in providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students,” Bronstein said in a letter to families. “Any symbols or messages of hate are completely unacceptable and are not tolerated in any of our schools or in our school community.”

The incident comes shortly after the district participated in Inclusive Schools Week, which focuses on promoting welcoming and supportive school environments. Bronstein said the graffiti serves as “a stark reminder that there is more work to be done.”

District officials said they will review and strengthen educational practices aimed at addressing antisemitism and other forms of hate, with an emphasis on prevention. The superintendent said the district will reflect on recent incidents and determine “the most meaningful steps” to educate students moving forward.

Families with questions or concerns were encouraged to contact members of the district’s administrative team.

School officials did not release additional details about the investigation or whether disciplinary action has been taken.
