North Salem Varsity Roundup: Tigers ready to rumble in postseason

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - With the regular season in the rearview, it's playoff time in Tiger town! Boys soccer will take the next step in defending their state title, and several of North Salem's squads are poised for deep postseason runs.

BOYS SOCCER

North Salem 7, Leffell 0

Thursday, Oct. 16

The Tigers pounded Leffell on the road behind standout performances from Liam Keegan (2 goals, 1 assist), Juben Lazri (2 goals), Sean Randall (1 goal, 1 assist), Jhon Rodrigues (1 goal, 1 assist), Nico Maya (1 goal, 1 assist), Matt Melkonian (1 goal), Angel Romero (1 assist), and Patrick Dooley (1 assist).

Playoff Picture

North Salem will host Tuckahoe in the sectional semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Somers 4, North Salem 0

Friday, Oct. 16

The Tuskers overpowered North Salem at home to close out the regular season.

FIELD HOCKEY

John Jay 7, North Salem 0

Monday, Oct. 20

The squad couldn't keep pace with the Wolves on the road to cap off regular season play.

North Salem 2, Albertus Magnus 0

Friday, Oct. 24

The Tigers topped Magnus in the opening round of the playoffs behind goals from Abby Cassidy and Leah Malvino. Robin Pockriss and Kylie Robinson had assists.

The Tigers will face Bronxville on the road on Monday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

VOLLEYBALL

Dobbs Ferry 3, North Salem 2

Tuesday, Oct. 14

North Salem fell in a five-set thriller in the annual Dig Pink Game, 17-25, 23-25, 27-25, 29-27, 11-15. Sadie Matt (26 assists, 19 digs, 2 aces, 1 block), Addy Moia (24 kills, 14 digs, 3 aces, 2 blocks, 1 assist), Ally Maza (9 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces, 1 assist), Sophia Miller (17 digs) and Cora Kennedy (14 digs) all played strong in the effort.

North Salem 3, Rye Neck 0

Thursday, Oct. 16

The Tigers recovered with a sweep on the road, 25-12, 25-9, 25-13. Matt (20 assists, 6 digs, 5 aces, 2 kills), Maza (10 kills, 5 aces, 4 blocks, 2 assists, 4 digs), Moia (10 kills, 7 digs, 2 aces, 1 block), and Miller (10 digs, 4 assists) all turned in their usual solid showings.

Dig Pink Tournament

Saturday, Oct. 18

The squad raised $1,500 for the Sideout Foundation’s revolutionary cancer research program. The Tigers finished the tied for third with Valhalla, with Moia and Maza named to the All-Tournament team.

North Salem 3, YMA 1

Monday, Oct. 20

The Tigers took down Yonkers Montessori Academy on the road, 22-25, 28-26, 25-19, 25-21. Addy Moia put the exclamation point on the victory by notching her 500th career dig.

Putnam Valley 3, North Salem 0

Wednesday, Oct. 22

North Salem took a tough loss to end the regular season, 10-25, 20-25, 13-25.

“We are ending the regular season 14-5,” said Coach Toni Fiore. “This is the most successful regular season I’ve had with girls over the past five years, and I’m looking forward to getting into the postseason. 

Playoff Picture

The Tigers will host either Keio Academy or Haldane in the sectional semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY

Coaches Invitational

Saturday, Oct. 18

The Tigers took their talents to Bowdoin Park to take on competition from throughout Section 1. With a packed field, North Salem runners turned in strong efforts behind standout performances in the Varsity 5K from Marissa Ferrara (21st), Freyja Smith (39th), Drew Karam (40th). Also logging excellent times in the freshman 3K were Shannon Moravick(4th), Nick Petronzi (6th), Everett Fryer (10th), and Andrew Barnett (16th).

The squad will be returning to Bowdoin Park on Nov. 8 for the Section Championship meet.
