MAHOPAC, N.Y. — A New Windsor man is under arrest after leading police from multiple jurisdictions on a chase through eastern Putnam County, which ended in Mahopac on Wednesday (Jan. 8).
According to a press release from the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, the incident began at around 11:30 a.m., when Putnam County 911 received multiple reports that a man was in the roadway on I84 westbound near I684, apparently trying to stop cars.
Police said that when a deputy and a New York State trooper got to the location, the man—later identified as 34-year-old Ian Assad Morgan— got into a vehicle parked nearby and began to flee.
“He then led multiple sheriff’s deputies and troopers on a pursuit westbound on I84 and then eastbound and then back again westbound where he avoided spike strips which were set up to attempt to stop him,” the Sheriff Department press statement said.
“Morgan then exited at Route 311, where he continued on local roads in Patterson, Kent, and into Carmel where he eventually stopped after striking a Carmel PD vehicle on Route 6 south of Baldwin Lane in Mahopac. He was taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing."
Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffman told Halston Media that the driver hit three Carmel PD cars, with Lt. Michael Bodo “ending it by blocking the path of the fleeing car."
“Thankfully, no injuries,” Hoffmann said, adding that the Carmel PD cars' damage appears to be repairable.
While the events leading up to the chase are still under investigation, Hoffmann said the driver “was trying to ram police cars and civilian vehicles and was driving down the middle of the road and the wrong side of the road in places.”
The Sheriff's Dept. said Carmel High School was put on a temporary hold-in-place, which has since been lifted.
This is a developing story
