Released after initial bust, suspect accused of another break-in hours later

A Mount Kisco man is accused of trying tried to break into a business in the village at 1 a.m. on Thursday, June 4 – less than six hours after he was arraigned on a separate burglary charge and released on his own recognizance, Westchester County Police said.

His arrest later on Thursday marked the second time in less than 24 hours that he was accused of burglary-related crimes.

Candelario Cervantes-Seferino, 22, of Britton Lane, was initially taken into custody at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, when officers on routine patrol observed him on Sarles Avenue, police said.

Cervantes-Seferino was known to have multiple outstanding warrants, police said.

They detained him and confirmed that he had a total of eight active warrants for the following charges: trespass/disorderly conduct, public urination, public consumption of alcoholic beverages, littering, and four additional trespass warrants.

These warrants were associated with his failure to appear in court to answer summonses issued to him previously during “quality-of-life” enforcement by county officers in Mount Kisco.

During arrest processing on the outstanding warrants, WCP detectives developed probable cause to charge Cervantes-Seferino with a burglary that occurred days earlier—on Sunday, May 31, at a downtown restaurant. In that break-in, $500 in cash was stolen and $1,000 in damage was done to the front entrance, police said.

He was also charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, and petit larceny, police said.

Cervantes-Seferino was arraigned on those charges and the outstanding warrants and released on his own recognizance at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, June 3.

About 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, officers were dispatched to a building on North Moger Avenue for a report of an attempted burglary. A review of security video revealed that a man used a large stone to try to shatter a storefront door to enter the premises at 1 a.m. The unsuccessful burglary attempt caused $5,000 in damage.

Detectives identified Cervantes-Seferino as a suspect in that incident.

Patrol officers began to search locations where they had had previous contacts with him, including in the vicinity of Main Street and Lexington Avenue. He was found sleeping behind a gas station on East Main Street and arrested at 2:44 p.m.

Cervantes-Seferino was charged with third-degree attempted burglary and second-degree criminal mischief in connection with the North Moger Avenue incident, police said.

After being booked at the Green Street Precinct, Cervantes-Seferino was arraigned in Village Court. Bail was set at $3,500 and Cervantes-Seferino was sent to the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla, police said.
