Mahopac traffic stop leads to drug bust

Put Valley man charged with child endangerment, plus more from the Putnam County Sheriff's Dept.

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—A Poughkeepsie man was arrested March 26 after a traffic stop on Route 6 in Mahopac led to the discovery of illegal drugs, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 6:45 p.m., investigators from the Sheriff’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit pulled over a vehicle after observing a large crack in its windshield. The driver, identified as 52-year-old Louis C. Cerbone, was found to be operating with a suspended license and was in possession of Oxycodone and crack cocaine.

Cerbone was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, a class D felony; criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor; aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, also a misdemeanor; and a traffic infraction for operating a vehicle with a fractured windshield.

He was arraigned before Judge Jacobellis and released on his own recognizance to appear in court at a later date.


Putnam Valley Man Charged With Burglary, Child Endangerment

PUTNAM VALLEY — A Putnam Valley man is facing felony charges after allegedly entering a home during the night and endangering a child, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

On March 9, investigators launched an investigation into a reported residential burglary and child endangerment in the town. Authorities learned that Joseph Taylor Brown, 39, who was known to the family, had attended a party at the residence earlier in the evening and later entered the home uninvited.

On March 25, a search warrant was executed at Brown’s residence. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of burglary in the second degree—one with sexual motivation—both class C felonies. He was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, both class A misdemeanors. A switchblade knife was recovered during the search.

Brown, a Level 1 sex offender, was arraigned in Putnam Valley Town Court and remanded on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. An order of protection was issued for the victim and the victim’s family.


Traffic Stop in Southeast Results in Drug, Forgery Charges

SOUTHEAST — Two men from Monticello were arrested early March 26 after a traffic stop led deputies to discover narcotics and forged documents, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said.

At approximately 2 a.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle on Danbury Road for an improper inspection sticker. The vehicle's occupants appeared nervous and gave conflicting accounts. A subsequent search uncovered quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and Suboxone.

The driver, Michael Mastrantone, 39, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor, and forgery in the second degree, a class D felony.

The passenger, 42-year-old Matthew Recabo, was charged with criminal possession of narcotics with intent to sell in the third degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, both class B felonies, as well as criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor.

Both were taken to the Putnam County Correctional Facility and held for arraignment.


Driver Crashes Into Patterson Auto Body Shop

PATTERSON — A Tesla crashed into a local auto body shop after running through an intersection at a high rate of speed, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said.

At approximately 6:45 a.m. on March 26, a deputy responded to a motor vehicle accident at Route 22 and Haviland Hollow Road. A Tesla driven by Simon Berg of Sherman, Connecticut, had been traveling eastbound on Haviland Hollow Road when it entered the intersection and struck the Patterson Auto Body building and a vehicle parked at the gas pumps.

Berg was treated at the scene by Patterson Ambulance. The incident remains under investigation.
