A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, after losing control of an electric dirt bike and being thrown from the vehicle in Mahopac, according to Carmel Police.
Police said officers responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 to the area of Watermelon Hill Road and Eleanor Drive for a report of a crash involving a teenage boy operating an electric dirt bike.
Officers and emergency medical personnel found the 13-year-old suffering from serious injuries.
A preliminary investigation indicates the teen lost control after striking an object along the side of the roadway, possibly a bush, and was thrown from the bike, police said.
The teenager was treated at the scene before being transported by a medevac helicopter to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment.
Carmel Police detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led up to the crash.
Police said the department is also coordinating with Mahopac School District to provide support to those affected by the accident.
In announcing the crash, Carmel Police also issued a warning to parents about high-powered electric two-wheelers that are sometimes sold or described as “e-bikes” but are legally considered motorcycles or off-road vehicles.
Often called “e-motos” or electric dirt bikes, some of the vehicles have no pedals and are capable of speeds exceeding 50 mph, police said. They cannot be registered for street use in New York and may not legally be operated on public roads.
Operating such vehicles would require a license, registration and insurance, requirements that most of these vehicles cannot meet, according to police.
“We urge parents to understand what their children are riding and where,” police said in a statement.
Carmel Police said additional information about the crash will be released as it becomes available.
