MAHOPAC, N.Y.—After the controversy surrounding the Emergency Response Team and the Battery Farm, it was refreshing to cover some locals in the spotlight for their achievements. Here are a few highlights.
Locals Gain the Spotlight
Mahopac made some waves in media and the arts this year.
In June, Mahopac resident Steven Skybell took us behind the scenes at the Tony Awards after his nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical for his work in “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.”
In October, we reported how a reality show dream came true for 57-year-old Mahopac mom Jeannie Geyer, who joined the cast of CBS mountain climbing contest “The Summit.”
Mahopac was also represented by authors with local roots.
In January, we profiled local author Ryan McCauley, who published his first book, “Realm of Radiance: Awakening.”
“The book takes place on a futuristic Earth that has gone through an apocalypse,” McCauley said.
We went from sci-fi/fantasy to grim reality with “College Girl Missing” (June 20), Mahopac HS-grad Shawn Cohen’s New York Times Bestseller that investigates the 2011 disappearance of Indiana University co-ed Lauren Spierer.
St. John’s Gets New Pastor
Saint John the Evangelist has new leadership after Rev. Szymon Kurpios became its leader. Originally from Poland, Kurpios was most recently at Saint James the Apostle in Carmel before coming to Mahopac, where he has emphasized service and support of the foot pantry.
Depelisi Awarded Congressional Medal
Mahopac resident Jim Dipelesi, who served two years in the Merchant Marine and two in the U.S. Navy during WWII, was presented the Merchant Mariners of World War II Congressional Gold Medal by Congressman Mike Lawler during a ceremony at Town Hall in February. The medal is the highest honor bestowed by Congress for those who have “created a lasting impact on American history.”
Mahopac Coaches Head to Big Game
Former Mahopac High School football coaches Gerry Keevins and Frank Miele had a very special trip to the Super Bowl thanks to a special connection as guests of their former player Dave Toub, who won his third world title as the Kansas City Chiefs’ special teams coordinator and assistant head coach.
