MAHOPAC, N.Y.—The Mahopac community is mourning the loss of Jennifer Cusumano, former president of the Special Education Parent Teacher Organization (SEPTO), who passed away on March 26 after a brief illness.

A GoFundMe page set up to support her during her illness shared the sad news:

“Jenn sadly passed away on 3/26/25. She fought as hard as she could and left this world knowing how much she was loved by so many people. She will be forever missed by all who knew her. Any donations moving forward will help pay for final expenses and supporting Tommy and Lenny through this incredibly difficult time.”

Cusumano was unexpectedly diagnosed with uterine cancer in late December.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mahopac SEPTO described Jenn as “one of the most amazing people you'd ever meet.” Known for her sharp sense of style and “a collection of vintage Pyrex that would make anyone jealous,” Jenn brought warmth, joy, and originality into every room she entered.

She was widely known as a vital resource in the community, especially when it came to helping families navigate the complexities of the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and self-direction programs.

“She would help anyone who needed assistance learn more about these programs and apply for them,” SEPTO wrote.

Those who knew her said she loved her role as a self-direction broker and worked tirelessly to support families. Her years of service on the SEPTO board made her “a pillar of strength, information, and humor for all those who crossed her path.”

She brought passion and creativity to every project, with a focus on improving special education and promoting inclusion in Mahopac. Jenn worked closely with Carmel Recreation and Parks to develop events like the Inclusive Friend Zone and other community dances. She also played a key role in launching the “Safe Me” program with the Carmel Police Department.

“She loved to celebrate the uniqueness of every person,” SEPTO noted. “She was a friend to everyone who crossed her path.”

Jennifer Cusumano’s loss is deeply felt throughout the Mahopac community. Her advocacy, compassion, and strength touched countless lives. As SEPTO wrote, “Jenn taught us lessons we will all carry as we pursue this new life without her in it.”
