A Mahopac man was arrested this week on felony drunken driving charges involving a child passenger—the second such arrest of a Mahopac resident in the past two weeks, according to New York State Police.
Skirianos M. Skirianos, 40, was stopped by troopers from State Police in Wappinger at approximately 11:02 a.m. on April 1 on Route 9 in Fishkill for a traffic violation, police said.
During the stop, troopers reported that Skirianos showed signs of intoxication and subsequently failed standardized field sobriety tests. Authorities said further investigation revealed that an 8-year-old child was in the vehicle at the time.
Skirianos was taken into custody and transported to State Police barracks in Wappinger for processing, where he refused to submit to a chemical breath test, police said. The child was released to a sober third party.
Skirianos was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger under Leandra’s Law, a class E felony, as well as driving while intoxicated, an unclassified misdemeanor. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Fishkill Town Court at a later date.
The arrest follows a similar incident several weeks ago involving another Mahopac resident.
On March 15, Anthony Mercado, 34, was stopped by state police on the Taconic State Parkway in Yorktown for alleged vehicle and traffic violations. Troopers said Mercado exhibited signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests.
Police said three children, ages 3, 7 and 9, were in the vehicle at the time of that stop, and he was charged with felony DWI under Leandra’s Law.
