Mahopac man charged in animal neglect case

Posted

A Mahopac man has been charged with animal cruelty after three dachshunds were found neglected inside a foreclosed home basement, authorities said.

The Putnam County SPCA said it received a complaint March 22 about dogs possibly left behind in the residence. Detectives responded to the property with a representative of a company managing the home on behalf of the deed holder.

Following an investigation, Michael Ward, 62, of Mahopac, was arrested March 25 and charged with three counts of animal cruelty in connection with the case.

Upon entering the home, investigators found three male dachshunds confined to a basement in complete darkness, surrounded by garbage, feces and debris. Authorities said there was no food or water available, and the conditions were deemed unsafe for the animals.

The dogs were removed from the residence and transported to Guardian Veterinary Specialists for evaluation and treatment. Veterinarians determined the animals were suffering from neglect and multiple medical issues consistent with a prolonged lack of care, including severe dental and eye disease, overgrown nails, dry and scaly skin, and poor hygiene. One dog was found to be extremely emaciated, with a body condition score of 1.5 out of 9.

All three dogs are now in stable condition and receiving ongoing care. Officials said they are expected to be made available for adoption at a later date.
