A contingent of Mahopac players helped the Brewster Rockets 16U girls softball team overcome early challenges to achieve glory this spring.
The feat is all the more impressive for a unit that went 0-5 in the fall and started the spring not knowing if they could even field a team due to a lack of coaches.
But Jackie DiDomenico, Keith Behler and Marc Swartz stepped up — and the girls did their part.
“They played their hearts out,” Behler said.
Mahopac players included shortstop/pitcher Nicole Behler, second baseman Tayla Cancellieri, left fielder Jayleen Sanchez, catcher Marissa Duran and first baseman Savanna Preikschat. They joined players from Brewster and Connecticut, including Kaitlin Walen, Kerri Moore, Cianna Andrews, Maddie Buturla, Madelyn Jones, Maddison Chomicki, Mollie Hearty and Sadie Schwartz. The team headed upstate for the Rotterdam (N.Y.) Girls Softball Summer Slam and showed plenty of grit against some stiff competition.
After losing in the Friday opener to the Halfmoon Heat, the Rockets battled the heat to win four straight on Saturday and Sunday, topping Greene County Outlaws (5-4) and Duanesburg Cyclones (5-4 after a two-out walk-off double by Moore) on Saturday. The Rockets again topped the Cyclones, 6-5, on Sunday, then broke out offensively for a 10-2 victory against Lady Bulldogs Extreme before falling to Totteram Regulators in the Sunday night championship game, 10-5.
“They played like they wanted it so bad and proved to themselves that they are champions,” Behler said.
