Mahopac author James Scarangella discusses his book 'United States 12.0 – Freedom vs. Communism: The Last Stand for America's Families'

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—Mahopac resident and father of five James Scarangella’s self-published book “United States 12.0 Freedom Versus Communism: The Last Stand for America’s Families” outlines what the author sees as an assault on the American way of life by anti-family forces.

“The nuclear family has been under quiet attack since 1965,” the book’s promotional material says. "The time is now to make a stand and get involved or accept the fate of tyrannical control in the new dark ages.”

The following interview was conducted by email and has been lightly edited.

What inspired you to write the book?

My first real job was a teacher back in the early ’90s. I was young and eager to change things and I was quickly schooled on both bureaucracy and unions and why neither one of them are good for the system. The overall apathy in the public system was real and so I left for the private sector. But after I left, I needed to come to terms with my brief tenure as a teacher and so I wrote what I thought was a pretty good analysis at the time. I did nothing with it. I tabled it until I started seeing a much bigger picture evolve in both education and healthcare and government 25 years later in general, all culminating with the COVID crisis. The past four to five years have been nothing short of survival mode for mine and most families and I felt I had to do something. So, I wrote this book with the intent that it may help others navigate for their family.

Tell us about the book: What are its arguments/positions?

“United States 12.0 Freedom Versus Communism: The Last Stand for America’s Families” is a book designed for the average lay person to understand the tyrannical forces that are really up against them. I title this tyrannical force CFSM communism, which is essentially communism, fascism, socialism, and Marxism all rolled up into one. The average person is challenged to draw distinctions where one starts and one begins, but they ultimately all end up in communism if not checked.

Whether it be in the educational or healthcare community, where the massive increases in bureaucracy and administrators have outpaced the growth of teachers and qualified doctors, almost tenfold, as well as their salaries. Parents are demonized for advocating for school or health choice, and long for freedom to choose.

But, the government is and has attempted to control them both and roll it all up into one socialized form of single-payer health system and very specific and singular curriculum with a much more detailed, political and propagandist message for a one-size-fits-all type of system.

Or with activist judges and non-government organizations (NGOs) seeking to destabilize community safety by demonizing police and letting criminals back out on the streets and attacking existing culture.

Or with the blatant and disgusting sexualization and mutilation of so many innocent children who don’t know any better to make decisions on their behalf. Or the moving away from a merit-based society in favor of fringe groups who produce and contribute nothing. Or the blatant and massive disregard for American citizenship and the family unit through everything just mentioned above, and of course, the incredible increase in illegal immigration, all with the intent to eliminate the middle class and create two functioning classes—poor/needy and rich. The goal here is to use fascism, socialism, communism, and Marxism all together to achieve these goals.

Whenever you hear the term “save our democracy” that is a dog whistle for communism, which is ironic. There is a massive difference between democracy and mob rule and a constitutional republic, which is what we are and it is not taught in the way that it should be taught.

These are just some of the points that make up the book, but they are the key points because at the core of everything is the family unit. If the family unit disappears the middle class disappears and if the middle class disappears our entire way of life disappears that is essentially the whole point of the book.

Tell us a little bit about your background.

As I say in the book, I’m a true child of the ’70s and ’80s and grew up on a multicultural block in the Bronx. I grew up in a Democratic house. My father was a union mechanic working for the airlines and our family like many other families converted to being Republican with the Jimmy Carter presidency and the subsequent ascendancy of Ronald Reagan.

A fairly normal life and existence: I played baseball and football lettered in them both in high school at Cardinal Spellman went onto Marist College joined ROTC earned a full academic scholarship transferred into Fordham and did my graduate work at Fordham both in the subject area of economics. I hold a BA and MA in economics and was a doctoral candidate, but never completed the program as the responsibilities of home became too great and the stress of it all was too much as I had a full-time job as well.

I spent 29 years [in industry] — four at GE and 25 at Sylvania Lighting — and had various degrees of executive management exposure and retired from them. I am presently an eastern regional manager for a large electrical company.

I’m a father of five. My oldest daughter is a teacher, my second daughter is in college. My third daughter is in high school. My first son is in high school and my youngest son is about to enter high school

In 2003 I purchased a home in Mahopac where we stayed for a few years and then left to return to family in the Bronx and raise our own family. In 2015 we moved back to Mahopac and the house that we owned, and renovated it and reside there today.

What do you hope to achieve with the book?

The main goal of the book is to point out that there have been numerous times in history where the United States has been under attack and each time I feel that the family unit has been in the center of the motivation to repel those attacks. I advocate that this is the 12th time in history where the idea of America is under a change, and I start that point with 1492 with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Which is a good example as it’s so unfortunate that today’s child doesn’t learn more about Christopher Columbus’ accomplishments but learn more to hate, and unfortunately, are taught the numerous lies and inaccuracies stemming from Howard Zinn’s book "A People’s History of the United States," which I also touch upon.

The whole point of the CFSM communist is to erase the rich and vibrant culture that has evolved and developed with this nation, and with its people by demonizing everything that we were taught to believe. At its core that is the problem, at its core that is the true nature of a communist. Because in the end it’s all about control to the communist and how best to do that but by eliminating the class that thinks for itself.

To bring it full circle, COVID-19 pointed that out more than anything else I’ve ever witnessed in my life and to that end I thought I needed to do something about it.

How has the response been?

Everyone who has actually read the book seems to have positive feedback. This book has its finger on the pulse of everything that is going on today and was written before everything that has happened today. No, I’m not Nostradamus. I am somewhat of a pragmatist and a family man who believes in freedom, efficiency, and choice.

If you are anti-family or a bureaucrat, then you probably won’t like this book very much.

What’s next?

I am told that each one of these chapters in this book can be its own book and I have a great deal more research on each of these, which would make the book more of a documented type of book versus an opinion type of book, which is what it really is about.

I want parents to understand that they’re not alone, but the angst that they feel with their children who have committed suicide, who are detached, confused, socially defunct, that there is hope, and that hope is in the form of a culture and morality shift.

Our Constitution is a great document, and our hope lies in the true freedom that it grants its citizenry. If we have the courage to go back after our freedom and truly protect the children of our society, then yes, there is true hope ahead.
