YORKTOWN, N.Y. — The North East Westchester Special Recreation floorball team returned home from the Special Olympics World Games bronze medalists.
Athletes and coaches from the Hawthorne-based agency were welcomed back to the United States on March 16 with a police escort from the Mt. Pleasant Police Department. Family, friends, and supporters were on hand to cheer and celebrate Team USA.
The team included athletes Michael Bub and Samantha Frederick, both from Yorktown, and coach Nancy Bellini, from Katonah. They, along with athletes Will Smith (Brewster), Louis Jost (Hawthorne), Andrew Stawicki (White Plains), and Ben Stofsky (Poughkeepsie) were selected to represent the U.S. at the Special Olympics World Games.
Tom Dumser, a volunteer coach with the NEWSR team, told Yorktown News that Team USA was “in a very competitive bracket” against teams from Germany, Austria and host country Italy.
“What a great experience for all the athletes and coaches,” he said. “There were many new friendships made with other athletes from the competing countries.”
A Facebook post from the organization celebrating the achievement said the bronze medal is a reflection of “the team’s hard work, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.”
The post also noted that the atmosphere of the games, along with the dedication and sportsmanship of the competitors, “exemplify the true spirit of the Special Olympics.”
“The team’s success at the Special Olympics World Games is a shining example of the power of sport to bring people together and create lasting change.”
