Local fire companies battle blaze at Brewster pizza shop

BREWSTER, N.Y. - On Saturday, April 19, an automatic alarm had firefighters racing to the scene of a blaze at a Brewster pizza shop.

Just after 9 p.m., Putnam County 911 dispatched members of the Brewster Fire Department to Five Brothers Pizza & Restaurant, located in the strip mall at 2505 Carmel Ave.

Responders updated the call to a commercial structure fire after reporting flames coming from inside the business.

BFD Assistant Chief Steven Miller was quickly on the scene, and requested a second alarm to bring in firefighters from Croton Falls, Carmel and Lake Carmel.

The blaze began in the pizzeria on the first floor, and sent smoke through the building. Brewster firefighters forced entry into the business and started an aggressive interior attack on the fire in the restaurant. Additional units searched the businesses on the second floor for possible fire extension.

Although there was heavy smoke reported on the upper level, firefighters were able to determine that the flames had not extended to the second floor.

“Thankfully, the fire was contained to the occupancy of origin due to our quick response and highly trained firefighters,” Chief Miller said.

Five Brothers suffered significant fire damage, and there was smoke damage reported at several other businesses in the strip mall.

A BFD firefighter was injured battling the fire and was transported to Putnam Hospital Center by Brewster EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. The Putnam County Fire Investigation Team is still working to determine the cause of the blaze.
