The Yorktown Town Board approved a zoning amendment on July 14 expanding the permitted uses at Jefferson Valley Mall.
Under the updated zoning rules, the mall complex can now include craft breweries, amusement centers and indoor recreation facilities.
Town officials said the change expands the types of businesses that can operate at the mall. Potential uses discussed include indoor trampoline parks and golf simulators.
“This zoning change allows us to adapt to modern commercial trends and keep our primary retail corridors vibrant," said Supervisor Ed Lachterman in a statement on Wednesday.
The amendment comes as shopping centers continue to add nontraditional retail uses, including entertainment, fitness and recreation businesses. Mall operators across the country have increasingly sought new types of tenants as department stores and other traditional retailers reduce their footprints or leave shopping centers.
Town officials said the updated zoning could allow prospective recreation and entertainment businesses to consider Jefferson Valley Mall for future locations.
