CROSS RIVER, N.Y. - John Jay flag football is set to begin its third season, and head coach Jason Kuhlmann is ready to take the reins. With extensive football coaching experience on his résumé, this marks his first time leading a flag football program—but he isn’t concerned about the transition.
“It’s just figuring out the little nuances because we do a lot of seven-on-seven in the spring. So I think I’ll fit right in,” he said.
Gianna Pelosi is expected to play a key role in the team’s success. “She’s an all-around athlete, and she’s been fully invested after only a week,” Kuhlmann said of his quarterback. “She’s a quick learner—the kind of athlete I’m looking for.”
Kuhlmann values both physical ability and instincts at the position. “There are two things I look for in a quarterback,” he said. “Someone who can throw and run, and someone who can process quickly. She has both.”
In the backfield, the Wolves boast a deep and talented group. “They’re fast and they can catch the ball,” Kuhlmann said.
Several eighth graders are part of that mix, continuing a strong pipeline from the youth program. “They all play flag at the youth level. They’re athletes, and I like the way they move, catch the ball, and pick things up,” he said of the group.
Defensively, the team will be anchored by upperclassman Mitzi Chan. “I know she led the defense last year, so she’ll be in that role again,” Kuhlmann said.
Overall, Kuhlmann is optimistic about the season ahead. “We’re going to be right in there with everybody else and hopefully win our fair share of games,” he said.
