James J. Carter passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by his daughters, their spouses and his dear friend AnnMarie. Jim raised his family in Somers, New York, and spent the last 20 years of his life in Southbury, Connecticut. He was a beloved son, father, grandfather, and a longtime friend to many.

Jim spent forty years in the insurance industry, serving as Vice President of Human Resources for Continental Insurance before becoming a successful executive headhunter and ultimately running his own business.

An avid golfer, Jim organized annual golf outings and spent his retirement enjoying the fairways with his golfing buddies. He was a lifelong die-hard New York Giants fan, rarely missing a game (or a practice at Pace University). He also enjoyed skiing, fishing trips, his many dogs and in his younger years, painting and basketball. Jim was listed as one of America’s outstanding young men in his 30’s.

Jim was born on April 8, 1939, in Freeport, New York, to Edyth and John Carter and was their only child. He grew up in Madison, New Jersey, attended Brown University and graduated from Upsala College, and later moved to Somers in 1971 with his wife, Carole, and their three children.

Predeceased by his parents and his granddaughter Jessie, Jim is survived by his loving family: his daughters Sue Carter (Paul Rose) and Jeanne Carter Hough (Eric Hough), his son Jeff Carter, and his grandchildren Christina Carter, Elaine Andersen, Jake Andersen, Mark Andersen, Kelsey Hough, and Evan Hough.

Jim was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
