Into the wild! Goldens Bridge Scouts conquer 129 miles of Canadian terrain

GOLDENS BRIDGE, N.Y. - Scouting America, the nation’s premier youth development organization, is inviting parents to discover a transformative experience for their children through its High Adventure program—an immersive outdoor journey designed to challenge, inspire, and build lifelong skills in leadership, resilience, and teamwork.

Troop 154 of Goldens Bridge recently embodied the spirit of High Adventure on an expedition to the Northern Tier base in Atikokan, Canada. The trip brought together 20 Scouts and Scouters from Troop 154 and across the Greater Hudson Valley, launching into the vast Canadian wilderness of Crownlands and Quetico—an elite destination where only two crews set out every other day.

The journey began in Thunder Bay with a stop at Fort William Historic Park, where Scouts stepped back in time to the era of the Voyageurs—the daring fur traders who once built North America’s largest trading post. Firing replica muskets and cannons, the Scouts experienced history firsthand before heading into the wild.

Once at the remote Northern Tier base, the crews received expert training in outfitting, portaging, and route planning. Then, the adventure began: nine days paddling through remote lakes and forests. Two crews, led by Life Scouts Alejandro T. and Jacques D., covered remarkable distances—129 miles with 25 portages, and 109 miles with 36 portages.

Beyond the physical challenge, the Scouts learned to thrive in the wilderness: catching and filleting fish, cooking over open fires, and working together to overcome obstacles. The shared triumphs built deep bonds of teamwork and camaraderie that will last a lifetime.

Looking ahead, Troop 154 is planning a pack rafting trek at Montana’s High Adventure base in 2026, combining backpacking with rafting for an epic capstone experience for graduating seniors and a new challenge for younger Scouts.

Parents interested in offering their children a transformative path in leadership, service, and outdoor adventure are encouraged to connect with local programs: Cub Scout Pack 154, Goldens Bridge Troop 154 (for boys), or Lewisboro/Katonah Troop 301 (for girls).
