MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCES

How Mahopac and surrounding communities will honor the fallen

Mahopac’s Memorial Day parade and ceremonies will take place Monday, May 25. The Mahopac VFW and American Legion will step off at 10:30 a.m. from Clark Place, followed by a ceremony at the monument near CVS. Afterward, Mahopac VFW will hold a ceremony at its post at 154 E. Lake Blvd., followed by an American Legion ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at the post on Buckshollow Road. Refreshments will be available at both posts.

John Morris Memorial Watchfire Vigil

Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park — Friday, May 22-Sunday, May 24

The Putnam County Joint Veterans Council will host the John Morris Memorial Watchfire Vigil at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park. The opening ceremony will take place Friday night and flag retirement ceremonies will continue throughout the vigil. Volunteers are welcome.

Opening ceremony: 7 p.m. Friday, May 22.
Vigil hours: 6 p.m.-6 a.m. daily.

Kent and Carmel — Sunday, May 24

VFW Post 1374 & Auxiliary, Carmel and American Legion Post 270 will host Memorial Day ceremonies in Kent and Carmel. Refreshments will follow the Carmel ceremony.

Kent ceremony: 9:30 a.m. at the monument on Terry Hill Road.
Carmel ceremony: 11 a.m. at the post home, 32 Gleneida Ave.

Putnam Valley — Monday, May 25

VFW Post 391 will host three short Memorial Day parades with ceremonies at Town Hall, Lake Peekskill and the post home on Oscawana Lake Road. An open house will follow the final ceremony.

Town Hall ceremony: 11 a.m.
Lake Peekskill ceremony: noon.
Post Home ceremony: 1 p.m. at 154 Oscawana Lake Road.

Brewster — Monday, May 25

VFW Post 672, American Legion Post 71 and Marine Corps League Detachment 242 will participate in Brewster’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony. The parade will begin at the Brewster Fire Department on North Main Street and ceremonies will take place at Southeast Veterans Park. Refreshments will follow at VFW Post 972.

Parade forms: 9:30 a.m.
Step-off: 10 a.m.

Cold Spring — Monday, May 25

VFW Post 2362 and American Legion Post 275 will host local Memorial Day ceremonies at the Main Street memorial and a wreath laying on the Hudson River.

Ceremony: 9 a.m.

Putnam Lake — Monday, May 25

VFW Post 9257 & Auxiliary and AMVETS Post 1111 will host a Memorial Day parade and ceremony at the monument at Fairfield Drive and Haviland Drive.

Parade: 10 a.m.
Ceremony: 11 a.m.
