A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of Samuel Michael Gonzalez, a Yorktown Heights resident and NYPD detective who died suddenly Sept. 26. He was 44.
Gonzalez worked as a detective in the NYPD Legal Bureau. According to his obituary, he was born in New York City in 1982 and graduated from Yorktown High School in 2000. He earned a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany in 2004 before attending Rutgers University, where he earned a law degree.
Gonzalez followed his father into the NYPD, joining the department in 2011 and later attaining the rank of detective in the Legal Bureau.
He was remembered by colleagues as a valued member of the NYPD whose kindness, dedication and friendship touched many people.
A fundraising campaign established through FundTheFirst.com, founded by retired NYPD Detective Robert Garland, is seeking to raise $30,000 to assist Gonzalez’s family. As of Wednesday evening, the campaign had raised at least $4,145 from 39 donors, according to the campaign page.
Garland told Yorktown News that Gonzalez’s colleagues established the campaign in his honor with his family’s approval, giving those who wanted to help one verified place to donate.
“Samuel was a valued member of our NYPD family whose kindness, dedication, and friendship touched the lives of so many,” the campaign said. “During this incredibly difficult time, we are coming together to support his family as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.”
Gonzalez is survived by his daughter, Aurelia; his spouse, Wasan; his parents, Samuel and Yolanda; and his brother, Eric.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Clark & Giordano Funeral Home.
