Freeman is the master of cherry-picking history

Posted

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to Brett Freeman’s Publisher’s Memo titled:  “My son saw the video of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. What happens now?” (Sept. 18, Page 10).  In his paean to Charlie Kirk, Freeman rightfully states: “Political violence is unacceptable. Always. No matter where it comes from, no matter who it targets.”  I fully agree with this position.  Unfortunately, as is his want, Freeman overreaches in asserting that “much of Kirk’s politics would not have been out of step with the Democratic Party of the 1990’s.”  Freeman cherry-picks Kirk’s views on “border security, free speech” and certain unspecified “social issues,”  yet ignores many of Kirk’s well-known, more radical right-wing positions on issues such as gun control and civil rights.  People can agree or disagree with Kirk’s views on these issues. But Freeman’s specious argument that Kirk was a paragon of 1990’s centrism or bipartisanship is nothing more than pure sophistry.
