Four members of Mahopac Girl Scout Troop 2479 received their Silver Awards during a Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Highest Awards Ceremony on June 6.
Ellie Potter earned her Silver Award after creating the Whispering Stones Kindness Rock Garden. She built the garden for those struggling with loneliness. Her project focused on raising awareness about loneliness and discomfort around others among children. After presenting her project to the Carmel Town Board, she built the community rock garden, added a page to Carmel’s website and led a Science of Happiness badge program to create a lasting impact with her message.
Ema Potter and Jasmine DeFino earned their Silver Awards by creating the Plants & Pollinator Garden. They stressed the importance of pollinators, the dangers they face and what can be done to address the issue. They created a garden at the Girl Scouts’ Rock Hill Camp in Mahopac and led activities with the town’s Daisy troops to educate them about the issue. They also created a website with videos and presented their project at meetings to reach the community.
Mia Brigante earned her Silver Award after creating the Red Poppy Project, which honored veterans and supported active-duty military personnel. She crocheted red poppy pins for distribution at veterans luncheons and ceremonies. She also partnered with United for the Troops to include her poppies in its care packages. The final part of her project included creating a military-themed activity book for the care packages to help keep service members entertained. The books were also handed out at events for veterans.
