UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Westchester and Putnam counties until 9 p.m. Tuesday, in addition to the flood watch already in effect through 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The flood watch also includes Orange and Rockland counties, along with portions of southern Connecticut.

Multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected through tonight, with widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches and isolated areas receiving 3 to 4 inches. The heaviest storms could produce rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour.

The tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall.

Excessive runoff may cause flooding of rivers, streams, creeks and other low-lying or flood-prone areas. Residents are urged to monitor forecasts, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be prepared to take shelter if a tornado warning or flash flood warning is issued for their area.
