A pre-dawn fire destroyed a maintenance building at the Putnam County Golf Course early Friday, with compromised propane tanks prompting a hazardous materials response, fire officials said.
The Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at about 2:15 a.m. to the course on Hill Street. First-arriving crews found the building, located behind the main clubhouse, fully involved.
Firefighters initiated an exterior attack while establishing a water supply from a hydrant on Bullet Hole Road. The operation was complicated by two 1,000-pound propane tanks that were compromised in the fire, leading to a request for the Putnam County Hazardous Materials Team.
NYSEG responded to secure power and mitigate electrical hazards as crews worked to contain the blaze.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Mahopac, Carmel, Kent and Putnam Valley. The Carmel Police Department and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office assisted as well.
Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association, Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department and Croton Falls Fire Department provided standby coverage during the incident.
Firefighters operated for several hours to bring the fire under control and extinguish hotspots. An excavator was used to assist with overhaul operations.
No injuries were reported. The structure sustained significant damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
