Families gathered at Mohegan Highlands on July 11 for a Storytime program, “What Do You Know About Rochambeau?” as part of Lake Day at Lake Mohegan. Led by storyteller Lynn Briggs, the program introduced children and history enthusiasts to the role French General Rochambeau played in helping America win the Revolutionary War.
Using colorful posters, a militia tent and colonial toys, Briggs shared the history of the partnership between Rochambeau and General George Washington and explained the importance of teamwork and cooperation between the French and American armies during the Siege of Yorktown.
Attendees learned about the significance of the Battle of Yorktown in securing American independence and explored the history that took place in their own community, including why Yorktown is named Yorktown. About 20 to 25 people attended the interactive program, where participants asked questions, discussed themes of freedom and cooperation, toured a military tent and received French and American flags.x
