Elephant Hotel celebrates bicentennial in Somers

SOMERS, N.Y. - Last weekend, it was a pachyderm party when the community gathered to celebrate the 200th birthday of a beloved Somers landmark.

A rainy morning couldn't stop the throng who gathered for The Elephant Hotel's bicentennial extravaganza on Saturday, May 31.

Organized by the Somers Historical Society, the event honored one of the town's most recognizable and significant buildings with a ceremony attended by local officials, Scout Troops, representatives from the Circus Historical Society, and a lively crowd of residents.

“I have had the pleasure of working here for four years, and this is truly a building for the people,” said Town Supervisor Scorrano. “It's a testament to all of the people who helped maintain it.”

Offering remarks on The Elephant Hotel's historical significance were Historical Society president Jonathon Benjamin, Town Historian Doris Jane Smith, and Bruce Hawley, president of the Circus Historical Society.

The hotel was constructed between 1820 and 1825 by Hachaliah Bailey, and became the headquarters of his traveling menagerie. Bailey's operation predated the formation of American circuses by 40 years, and he is considered to be one of the most influential figures in 19th century circus history.

“We are so proud to be here celebrating a building that has played such an important role in the history of the circus,” Hawley remarked.

Festivities continued with Girl Scout Troop #2630 presenting a banner and receiving their community service merit badges, and “Howlin'” Marty Stole performing "Baby Elephant Walk" and leading the crowd in a rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

A pair of Somers High School alumni were able to showcase their creativity at the event, with Simone Kurtz designing the bicentennial logo and pastry chef Patrice Lovell preparing the cake. After the ceremony, Eagle Scout candidate James Maoriello was on hand to offer kids hamlet walking tours, and youngsters enjoyed the ArtsMobile arts and crafts table presented by ArtsWestchester, which was sponsored by White Plains Hospital and Westchester County.

The day would also see Somers receive proclamations from the County Board of Legislators, Congressman Mike Lawler, Senator Pete Harckham, and Assemblyman Matt Slater.

Organizers offered a special thanks to the Somers Town Board, Parks & Recreation and Highway Departments, Boy Scout Troops #228 and #376, Girl Scout Troop #2630, Putnam County Savings Bank Foundation, and HoneyBee Grove Flower Farm and Heather Maguire Floral Design for providing the floral arrangements for the event.
