Edward Robert Grexa passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, at his home in Cortlandt Manor, New York. Born on December 29, 1936, in the Bronx, New York, to the late Joseph and Caroline (Krankus) Grexa, Ed’s journey through life was marked by devotion to his family and service to his country and community.
Ed leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment, exemplified by his 66-year marriage to his beloved wife, Karen. Together they raised their daughters, Denise (deceased) and Alisa (Michael) in their home in the Town of Cortlandt. His grandchildren, Lauren (Gil), Cody (Amanda), Ciarra (Bradley), and Alana, and great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Ryder, were his pride and joy. Ed is survived by his brothers, William (Grace) and George (Barbara), and many nieces and nephews and predeceased by his brothers, Rudolph (Jacqueline) and Joseph.
A proud veteran, Ed served his country with distinction in the United States Army National Guard from 1955 to 1996. His commitment to service extended into his civilian life as well, where he was a former commissioner and a 69-year member of the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association and an active member of the Verplanck American Legion Post 1030.
Ed was a man of many interests. If he wasn’t tinkering with his 1951 Willy’s Jeep, he could often be found with a fishing rod in hand, pondering over military history, or scouting the next great find at a gun show. There was hardly anything he couldn’t fix—except electrical work, which he happily left to his brother Billy. Ed collected many things, but it was his collection of friends and stories that truly enriched his life. He never met a stranger and had a knack for making lifelong friends in the span of a single conversation. Ed was known for his strong opinions, often shared over his favorite Fox News programs.
Known as “Gertz” to his children, grandchildren, and inner circle, he was always present at countless sporting events where he gave his unwavering support (and occasionally his dissenting opinions on referee calls) from the sidelines.
A proud family man, he was the first to raise a glass in celebration of his family’s achievements, no matter how big or small. With a heart as big as his personality and as someone who always put the needs of others first, Ed has left an indelible mark on the world.
Those who knew Ed will remember him as loving, funny, and selfless. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his memory will continue to inspire. Edward Robert Grexa will be deeply missed and forever cherished in the stories and memories that will be passed down through generations.
