Driver charged after crash downs utility pole, snarls traffic

Posted

A three-vehicle crash near several Mahopac schools Tuesday afternoon, June 9, left one person injured, brought down utility wires and forced the closure of a busy intersection for several hours.

According to the Carmel Police Department, the accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at the intersection of Baldwin Place Road and Myrtle Avenue.

Police said a 2024 GMC pickup truck driven by a 33-year-old local man was traveling northbound on Baldwin Place Road when it crossed into the southbound lane while negotiating a curve near Myrtle Avenue. The pickup struck a 2017 Hyundai sedan before continuing off the roadway and crashing into a utility pole.

The impact snapped the pole in half, leaving the upper section suspended by utility wires. Police said the falling wires landed on a 2022 Kia SUV that was traveling southbound on Myrtle Avenue and approaching the stop sign at Baldwin Place Road.

The driver of the pickup suffered an arm injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. During the investigation, police discovered the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver's license. He was issued summonses at the scene and is scheduled to appear in Carmel Justice Court at a later date.

Members of the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department responded within minutes of the dispatch and assisted Carmel Police and EMS personnel in securing the scene, treating the injured motorist and protecting motorists and nearby residents from the hazards created by the downed wires.

The crash occurred near Mahopac High School, Mahopac Middle School, and Mahopac Falls School, creating traffic disruptions during afternoon dismissal. Authorities said all schools remained accessible through alternate routes, although dismissals were delayed.

Portions of Baldwin Place Road and Myrtle Avenue remained closed for an extended period while crews from NYSEG and Verizon replaced the damaged utility pole and repaired the downed lines.

The Carmel Police Department was also assisted by the Sheriff's Office school resource sufficers, Carmel EMS, NYSEG, Verizon, and other emergency personnel.

The investigation remains ongoing.
