Downed power lines spark 4-acre brush fire near Carmel-Mahopac border

Posted

High winds that brought down a tree and utility lines sparked a brush fire Monday afternoon, May 4, near the Carmel–Mahopac border, prompting a multi-agency response and temporary power outages, according to the Carmel Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to the area of Drewville Road after reports of downed wires and a rapidly spreading brush fire. Officials said the fallen tree struck power lines, causing arcing wires that ignited nearby vegetation.

The fire burned about 4 acres before crews were able to contain it. Authorities said the incident also caused temporary power and cable outages in the surrounding area.

Because of the size of the fire and ongoing electrical hazards, mutual aid was requested from neighboring departments, including Mahopac, Brewster, and Lake Carmel. NYSEG utility crews also responded to address damaged power lines.

Emergency crews remained on scene for an extended period as firefighters worked to extinguish hotspots, and utility workers secured the area. Drewville Road near West Shore Drive was closed during suppression and repair operations.

The Carmel Fire Department reminded residents to stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately to 911 or the utility company. Officials warned that all downed wires should be treated as energized until utility personnel determine otherwise.
