Democrat Gwen Burke believes a career as an environmental engineer will be an asset on the Putnam County Legislature, where she is running against Republican and former Mahopac School Board Trustee Tanner McCracken to represent District 8.
The two are running for the seat occupied by Republican Amy Sayegh, who decided not to seek reelection. McCracken, who is also running on the Conservative Party line, won a primary against GOP-endorsed candidate Frank Lombardi to secure the Republican nomination.
A press release from her campaign said Burke, who is also running on the Putnam Party line, will “bring a new professionalism to the County Legislature.”
The campaign notes that Burke has been part of the Mahopac community for 34 years and raised her children here.
“Many know her as a neighbor, a math or science tutor, a Girl Scout leader or a soccer mom,” the press release said.
As an environmental engineer, Burke has worked with municipalities “for over 20 years to help them find creative solutions to challenges related to solid waste, air quality, stormwater, drinking water and wastewater issues,” the release said.
“She helps make decisions regarding roadway repairs and traffic flow to minimize air and water pollution,” the release said, “and has developed an extensive understanding of the rules and regulations facing municipal projects during the approval process.”
“As a project manager with financial responsibilities, she has succeeded in bringing large-scale projects in on time and on budget,” the release said. “She promises to bring that expertise to the County Legislature to work to solve the issues facing the residents of this county, and to strive to develop solutions that will benefit all who live, work and play here.”
Burke said if elected she “will always strive to find sound, creative and fiscally responsible solutions to the challenges we face every day in our community—including challenges related to workforce development, affordable housing, the mental health crisis, preserving our land and our natural resources, and protecting the rights of all who live and work in Putnam County.”
“I look forward to discussing these priorities with voters in the months ahead.”
