Delivering the love: Somers neighborhood bids farewell to beloved UPS driver

SOMERS, N.Y. — Lifelong Somers resident Matt Mohan has spent more than two decades distributing parcels in his hometown. But before he officially retires from UPS, his customers had an important package of their own to deliver.

More than 20 residents from Granite Springs and West Somers Park gathered at a home of Bobby and Alicia Deodhari on Richard Somers Road on Jan. 24, braving the cold to give their favorite delivery man a grateful sendoff.

When Mohan arrived, he was greeted with hugs and handshakes from a neighborhood that has become accustomed to his friendly presence dropping off packages.

Mohan, a member of the Somers High School Class of 1990 and former member of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department, will be wrapping up his career with UPS at the end of March. In retirement, he plans to move to Lake George.

But before he rides off into the sunset, he was showered with praise from the customers on his route, who took up a collection in the amount of $2,400 as a way of expressing their gratitude.

When asked about Mohan’s eventual replacement, one of his customers remarked, “that’s like playing shortstop for the Yankees after Derek Jeter.”

Before the party broke up, Mohan offered his own words of thanks.

“Thank you so much for being here,” he said. “I'm a lifer here in Somers. I loved growing up in this town. To get the route that I was on for 25 years has been amazing. I've been honored to be here."
