The Lakeland Central School District has named Alfonse Davino interim principal of Lakeland High School.

Davino began his career in New York City as a social studies teacher and spent 13 years as an assistant principal there. He joined the Lakeland district 14 years ago, holding several leadership roles, including assistant principal at Lakeland High School and principal of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, before returning to the high school.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and communication from St. John’s University and a master’s in administration from the College of New Rochelle. The district said in an announcement Friday that he has been a strong advocate for students and staff, fostering meaningful learning experiences and connections within the school community.

“My educational philosophy is that every student has the potential to achieve their goals. I am committed to creating a culture that fosters a nurturing environment through collaborative work with all members of the Lakeland community,” Davino said in the district update. “Success extends beyond the classroom, and I am dedicated to helping students explore their interests and discover what motivates them to strive for excellence.”

Davino added that he looks forward to serving in this new capacity.

Superintendent of Schools Karen Gagliardi said she and her district looks forward to Davino’s “continued leadership, vision, and dedication to the students, staff, and families of the Lakeland community.”

Christopher Cummings announced he will step down from his role as principal earlier this week, ending a decade as the school’s leader and more than 23 years with the Lakeland School District.

In a letter to the community posted to the high school’s social media pages, Cummings said the decision came after careful thought and reflection.

“The past 10 years as principal—and over 23 years in the Lakeland School District—have been truly amazing. It has been an honor to work alongside such dedicated students, staff, families, and community members,” he wrote. “Together, we have built something very special, and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished.”

He added that life’s pace has reminded him to embrace new opportunities

“While change is never easy, I am filled with gratitude, optimism, and excitement for what lies ahead—for both myself and the Lakeland High School community,” Cummings wrote.

Cummings thanked the community for its support and said the school will always hold a special place in his heart.

“I look forward to crossing paths again—whether on the stage, on the field, or at graduation,” he wrote.
