Daniel Strauss, 86, passed away peacefully on April 6th, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to his family, his community, and the many friendships he cherished throughout his life.
Born on April 4, 1940, in England to the late Agnes (Samson) and Arthur Strauss, Dan spent his early years there before making New York his home. An only child, graduated from Hunter College, where he proudly served as captain of both the soccer and tennis teams, and also served in the Army Reserves. It was at Hunter College that Dan met his beloved wife, Carol. They married in August 1962 and settled in Yorktown Heights, where they raised their three children.
Dan devoted his entire professional career to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, where he built not only a successful career but also many lasting relationships. Under the mentorship of Les Ventimiglia—who became a lifelong friend—Dan exemplified commitment, integrity, and loyalty. It was also there that he formed a lasting friendship with Kee Kong.
An avid soccer player, Dan found great joy in the game and in coaching others. Known to many as “Soccer Dan,” he began coaching Pee Wee Soccer for the Town, sharing his passion for the game with countless young players. In the men’s league, he also formed a cherished friendship with Mike Bevanda more than 45 years ago—a bond built on countless games, shared laughter, and a lifetime of friendship.
Dan was a familiar and friendly face at Uncle Giuseppe’s, where his daily visits led to many friendships with employees and his morning coffee group. A devoted member of the Yorktown community for more than 60 years, he took great pride in keeping his town clean, dedicating countless volunteer hours to picking up litter and weeding public spaces. He also remained actively engaged in local matters through regular attendance at town board meetings.
Above all, Dan was a devoted family man. He took immense pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, who brought him great joy. He is survived by his loving children: Craig Strauss and his wife, Tracey; Pam Strauss; and Leigh Minella. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: JD and Anna Colarusso, and Julianne and Lauren Strauss.
Dan was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol Strauss, in October 2025, and his son-in-law, Craig Minella, in 2023. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Charlie Giandana, and his wife, Nancy; nieces Anna and Lisa; cousins Joe, Ellen, and Victor Mascolo; and many members of the Samson family. He was predeceased by his nephew, Chuck Giandana.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan’s memory to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Westchester.
