Constituent calls Lawler out of step with district

Posted

Dear Editor,

I attended Congressman Mike Lawler's town hall in Yorktown last month. His positions are deeply MAGA and frankly an affront to the constituents of Congressional District 17.

A few notable takeaways: Lawler described the ICE actions in Minneapolis as "tragic" — the same word he applied to the killing of over 175 Iranian schoolchildren. "Tragic" falls woefully short. These events demand far stronger moral condemnation; a principled leader should not gloss over what could reasonably constitute criminal acts or war crimes.

His dismissal of the War Powers Act — arguing it's unnecessary because prior presidents ignored it — is simply inexcusable. Since Trump's term began, military excursions have unfolded across multiple countries with little congressional oversight. Spending one billion dollars a day on the war in Iran is not a rounding error; it is a crushing financial burden on millions of American taxpayers that demands real accountability.

On energy, Lawler is championing the reopening of Indian Point. This is a red herring that sidesteps the actual conversation about energy costs and needs. The plant was shuttered due to legitimate safety concerns for surrounding high-density communities. Rather than looking backward to solutions that no longer serve us, we should be accelerating forward-looking alternatives — particularly renewables, which have become increasingly viable and cost-effective.

It is clear that Mike Lawler's positions are fully aligned with MAGA ideology. The one thing he may actually be correct about is his own rapidly diminishing chance of re-election this fall.
