MAHOPAC, N.Y.— Town of Carmel police are participating in this year’s No Empty Chair campaign, which runs from April 21 through April 25.
The campaign, organized and grant-supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC), is a statewide initiative that focuses on safe teen driving during the upcoming prom and graduation season.
Each day of No Empty Chair week will focus on a different topic of traffic safety. Carmel police will be on the town’s roads with additional marked and unmarked patrols, engaging drivers and enforcing violations with an emphasis on the following infractions:
Monday, April 21 — Speeding in school zones
Tuesday, April 22 — Seat belt and child restraints
Wednesday, April 23 — Cell phone use and texting
Thursday, April 24 — Operation Safe Stop, school bus enforcement
Friday, April 25 — Underage drinking and impaired driving
“Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and serious injury for people ages 16 to 20," according to GTSC. "Young drivers are also greatly overrepresented in crashes. Some of the leading causes of these crashes are excessive speed, distractions and driver inexperience.”
The No Empty Chair campaign aims to increase safe driving among younger drivers through education, engagement and enforcement.
The goal is for young drivers to “be in their chair” for prom and graduation season.
More information for younger drivers is available in the GTSC’s Younger Drivers Toolkit at trafficsafety.ny.gov/younger-drivers-toolkit-0.
