Carmel PD hires veteran NYPD officer to join force

The Carmel Town Board has chosen a nine-year veteran of the New York City Police Department to join the town’s police force.

The board voted Wednesday, Aug. 12, to appoint Carmel Hamlet resident Michael Arini as a police officer, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Lt. Neil Brown.

Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann introduced Arini to the board before the appointment, noting that he is a Yorktown native who now lives in Carmel.

“Mike’s a resident of Carmel, [and a] native of Yorktown and obviously grew up in the area,” Hoffmann said.

Arini previously served as a firefighter with the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department and as an emergency medical technician before beginning his law enforcement career.

For the past nine years, Arini has served with the NYPD, most recently as a narcotics detective in Manhattan North, Hoffmann said.

Because Arini is transferring from another police agency, he will not have to undergo the full training process required of a new officer, allowing him to begin patrol duties relatively quickly.

“As a current-service police officer, he would qualify for an abbreviated field training session — about a month — and then we’d be able to get him out on the road and onto patrol,” Hoffmann told the board.

The Town Board, which also serves as commissioners of the Carmel Police Department, subsequently approved Arini’s appointment. The resolution makes the appointment effective immediately at an annual transfer salary of $72,584.

Arini’s appointment is probationary and subject to New York State Civil Service Law and applicable civil service rules and regulations.
