Carmel Democrats look to build on recent gains

Posted

Dear Editor,

There are 6,465 registered Democrats in Carmel.

And for too long they have had no voice in their town or county governments. As the newly elected chair of the Carmel Democratic Committee, I am determined to change that. I have good reason to be optimistic. Last year’s Democratic candidates in Carmel significantly closed the gap on Election Day, coming closer to success than they have in decades. County-wide, Philipstown is solidly blue, while Putnam Valley, Patterson and Kent all elected Democrats in their town governments. Our town committee is growing, as well, and I am joined by a strong leadership team to achieve this goal.

Why all this change? The people of Carmel and Putnam County are frustrated, even angry, with the town and county government. Putnam is shrinking and stagnant. In Carmel, there never seems to be any progress on important projects. Prices on electric, gas and food are strangling them. There are no job opportunities or housing for our young people, while our seniors are being squeezed out by taxes and inflation. And our current town and county governments seem more focused on infighting than on the needs of our people.

That is why voters are turning to our candidates. They look to County Executive candidate Brett Yarris, a successful entrepreneur who cares about people, to bring a fresh vision for vibrant and responsible growth to Putnam. They want people on the legislature like Gwen Burke, who will bring professional experience to protect both the environment and our county finances.

The Carmel Democratic Committee welcomes newcomers to join us, either as district leaders or volunteers, if they share our vision for a more open and responsible government that serves the needs of all our people. We can be reached at carmelnydems@gmail.com.

-Marsha Waldman, chair of the Carmel Democratic Committee
