Braver Angels host debate on phasing out fossil fuels

BEDFORD, N.Y. - On Sept. 21, the Westchester Braver Angels Alliance hosted a public debate on whether to phase out fossil fuels at the Bedford Community House. Participants represented a range of political perspectives, including a speaker from Nuclear NY who discussed the benefits of nuclear energy. The debate was moderated by trained chairperson Sara Silver.

While most speakers agreed that climate change poses a serious challenge, opinions differed on the best course of action and the appropriate timeline for addressing it. The program began with four-minute opening statements alternating between opposing viewpoints, followed by opportunities for audience members to ask questions of curiosity. Subsequent two-minute speeches allowed for continued respectful and spirited discussion.

Braver Angels, a national nonprofit founded in 2016, is dedicated to bridging the political divide through dialogue, debate, and collaboration. The organization hosts workshops, debates, and civic engagement events across the country and throughout New York State.

The Westchester Alliance recently held a Common Ground Workshop on immigration and will host an upcoming workshop on "Politics and the Family" at the Bedford Playhouse on Nov. 20. More information can be found on the Bedford Playhouse website.
