Braver Angels and Bedford Playhouse partner for depolarization workshop

BEDFORD, N.Y. - Braver Angels and the Bedford Playhouse recently joined forces to present a workshop aimed at helping people recognize and reduce their own polarizing tendencies.

Held at the Bedford Playhouse on June 19, the event was led by Braver Angels Westchester Alliance leaders Sara Silver and Don Scott.

The session began with a short film on political polarization, setting the stage for a deeper and more personal exploration. Participants then completed a self-reflective questionnaire designed to highlight how individuals may unknowingly contribute to division by stereotyping or demonizing others, rather than acknowledging the complexity of different viewpoints. This exercise was a key component of the “Depolarizing Ourselves” workshop.

Attendees engaged in a thoughtful Q&A, with questions touching on how to distinguish a person from their political affiliation. The discussion explored the idea that support for a politician doesn’t necessarily mean endorsing all of their views. Many people, it was noted, vote based on nuanced reasoning—choosing the candidate they feel is better, even if they don’t fully agree with them.

A central takeaway from the workshop was learning how to have respectful, productive conversations with people who hold different political views. Audience members expressed that the tools shared during the session would help improve communication not only with acquaintances, but also with close family and friends.

The Westchester Alliance meets every other month and typically centers each meeting around a timely topic. The group’s mission is to foster understanding through curiosity and open-minded discussion. New members are always welcome.
