A Putnam Valley man escaped serious injury Wednesday after a large boulder crashed through the windshield of his vehicle on the Taconic State Parkway at the Carmel-Putnam Valley town line.

According to New York State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 12:12 p.m. on July 8 as Peter J. Eliopoulos, 60, of Putnam Valley, was driving a 2019 Toyota northbound near mile marker 25.3.

Police said a rock fell from the eastern shoulder of the parkway, causing Eliopoulos to lose control of the vehicle before it struck the center median.

Eliopoulos was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. State Police spokeswoman Trooper Krystal Paolicelli said the driver remained conscious following the crash.

According to published reports, the boulder smashed through the vehicle's windshield after tumbling onto the roadway between Bryant Pond Road and Peekskill Hollow Road.

Calls to the Putnam County 911 Center brought members of the Mahopac Falls Fire Department, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, an Empress paramedic and New York State Police troopers from the Stormville barracks to the scene.

Troopers and members of the Mahopac Falls Fire Police temporarily shut down both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway while emergency crews treated the injured driver and cleared the wreckage, resulting in significant traffic delays.

The crash remains under investigation by the New York State Police.
