Before you praise Charlie Kirk, listen to his own words

Posted

Dear Editor,

I disagree with your opinion article ("Liberals, I get why you're upset," Sept. 25, Page 14).

To say you covered the peaceful protest in response to the death of George Floyd is, of course, appropriate, but since people seem to want to canonize Charlie Kirk, you should know he is on record stating Floyd died of a drug overdose, then retracting the statement when proven false by a medical examiner, but repeating the lie at a "Prove Me Wrong" event.

As many rush to open Turning Point groups in our community, are they doing so to have open debates on issues or is it a rush to regurgitate hate. I would recommend those who were cheered at the Kirk memorial to examine his words and say in their own voice some of the reprehensible quotes about women, people of color, Jews and people who are LGBTQ. If you say the words, maybe you will think twice on how to conduct your Turning Point group; all will/should welcome honest debate but not hateful lies. Of course you are entitled to believe hateful lies, but do so at your own intellectual peril.

As far as Jimmy Kimmel's temporary suspension, Kimmel merely stated that many in the MAGA movement rushed to blame liberal, transgender people for the murder with no proof and that Tyler Robinson was more likely a conservative from his family upbringing; certainly not insensitive and possibly true. Compare that to Roseanne Barr who described senior Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett as the child of the Muslim Brotherhood and “Planet of the Apes.” That is a racial slur. There is no comparison; there is no double standard; one is a pushback to initial Administration/MAGA lies (by the way, JD Vance still states liberal rhetoric is the cause of political violence, which is untrue) and the other shows racism.
