BEDFORD, N.Y. - Town officials are asking the community’s help in deciding on the improvements to make at Katonah Memorial Park’s playground.
As outlined at the Town Board’s April 21 meeting, the playground will undergo a wholesale facelift over the summer and be ready for use by late fall. But before any work begins, residents are being asked in a survey to tell recreation leaders what they’d like to see in the refurbished playground.
And before the first shovel turns the first spadeful of dirt, cash will be needed to pay for the project. The Town Board set a public hearing for May 19 at 6 p.m. on plans to obtain up to $500,000 in bonds for that purpose.
Bedford’s superintendent of recreation and parks, Chris Soi, told the board that “we are going to be reaching out for public input [on park improvements].”
The April 23 edition of Bedford Rec News, a biweekly newsletter sent to subscribers on the department’s Constant Contact distribution list, contained the brief survey, he said. It asks about the residents themselves as well as specific attractions the park should replace or add.
The link to the survey is available HERE.
Bedford Rec News also appears on the site and accepts subscription requests.
Rec and Parks officials as well as their citizen advisors are “kind of in the research phase,” Soi said.
“We did a field trip with some of our Rec and Parks advisory committee members to see some playgrounds and get some hands-on experience and takeaways from what’s out there,” he said. “There’s so much out there and obviously we want to be accessible, inclusive, fun, challenging. There’s a lot to be put in there.”
Katonah’s park upgrade occupied a small portion of Soi’s 36-minute presentation to the board, which focused largely on spring and summer rec programs. Listings of all that’s available are included in the department’s printed brochure, which Soi called “a good reference for everything that we do.”
“But we are always pushing our programs, promotions through our other channels,” the superintendent noted, including the rec website, social media like Facebook and Bedford Rec News.
TRAFFIC SAFETY PANEL
Seven volunteer members of the Traffic Safety Working Group were reappointed at the Town Board’s April 21 meeting.
The citizen members, who serve alongside town officials in the quest for safe streets and highways, are the chairman, Don Scott, along with Michael Weisburger, Brendan Keegan, David Dobbins, Drew Marchiano, Mary Cassidy and Geraldine Zikely.
Established in 2014, the panel advises the Town Board on safety matters involving drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
VEITH REAPPOINTED
Frank Veith has been reappointed to the Board of Assessment Review for a term expiring on Sept. 30, 2030.
“Frank worked as an attorney for over 30 years,” Calves said in recommending renewal of his appointment, “and his subject matter expertise will be valuable to this important process.”
The assessment review panel considers grievances challenging tentative real-property tax assessments and considers applications for tax exemptions.
